A main feature of attracting our target audience is to reach out to them in their 'territory'. For this we researched into significant places where teenagers will spend most of their time, and an easily accessible and cheap area we found was that of social networking.
Therefore we chose to create a Facebook group focused on our 'film', AVARITIA. In order to carry out primary research into the success of this distribution and also to gain a true insight into whether our concept attracts such audience, we made so it was perceived to be an actual film, rather than a student project. This would provide a more valid response.
AVARITIA : Facebook group
To attract our target audience we have used voyeuristic camera-work similar to that in the Saw films as this has proven popular with our target audience of young adults. Similarly we also used archetypal features of the horror/thriller genre as they are profound for being popular. Examples include: an enigma narrative, quick editing and conventional characters such as Propp's princess and villain. To fulfill the audiences Uses and Gratifications (Blumler and Katz) we ensured fine detail to intricate parts of the film. Firstly, Surveillance- this is reached through highlighting issues in Britain for the audience to become more familiar with. These include binge drinking, bulimia, underage sex, STIs and racism. Diversion - the audience can escape the daily grind of everyday life by being drawn into the enigma narrative, and receive a thrilling sense through guessing who will die next, and more importantly how they will die. Personal relationships- are created through the audience becoming concerned for the well-being of the on screen characters and wanting them to survive. Finally, personal identity is created through the diverse range of charcters and charcter traits. Each of the charcters are different, and therefore with such a big group of protagonists increases the appeal of 'avaritia' to the target audience. More importantly, the charcters are roughly the same age as the target aduience and additionally share the same idoelogies. Therefore the identification between audience and character increases.
